The Nose Monitor

Compact, comprehensive, durable

The Nose Monitor is the ideal IAQ monitoring product for any interior space. Its compact size, automated data collection system, and powerful data analysis algorithms make it an efficient and sophisticated means to measure, manage and conserve energy.

PureChoice engineers selected the highest quality sensors from around the world, balancing price, reliability and durability. Microprocessors control the operation of all sensors, including thermal regulation, initial setup and calibration, conversion to engineering units, digital messaging and data transfer. All Noses now include a miniature circulating fan to ensure the accuracy of the temperature and humidity readings by exchanging the volume of air within the Nose several times per minute. All sensors have been mounted into a single-printed circuit board installed into a durable yet discreet thermoplastic housing.

PureChoice currently offers The Nose Monitor in five configurations:

LonMark
  • 5-sensor platform (temperature, relative humidity, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and odors and gasses)
  • 4-sensor platform (temperature, relative humidity, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide)
  • 3-sensor platform (temperature, relative humidity, and carbon dioxide)

Analog
  • 3-sensor platform (temperature, relative humidity, and carbon dioxide) provides an output of 0-10 VDC or 4-20 mA, field selectable for each sensor.

Etherenet (New!)
  • 3-sensor platform (temperature, relative humidity, and carbon dioxide) with the ability to add up to three additional interchangeable and hot-swappable sensors.
Lonworks XIF and plugins

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What's the best application for The Nose Monitor?
The best application for The Nose Monitor is in buildings, whose owners and managers are concerned about the overall IAQ of the building, extending beyond just measuring temperature. The Nose monitors and measures the five key parameters necessary to support complete building comfort as well as healthy and productive employees, staff and students.
Q: How many Noses are needed for a building?
Each facility is different. There should be enough Noses used to give a good representation of the environment. One Nose should be used for each problematic area where contaminations are known to infiltrate. A good analogy would be to think of the Nose as a thermostat. Obviously, everyone in an occupied building would like his or her own thermostat. Practicality, however, dictates that one thermostat or in this case one Nose, be used for a specific building zone defined by area, location, hours of occupation, contamination field, etc.
Q: Where should Noses be placed?
The Nose should be located in the breathing space for occupied areas or approximately 70 inches above the floor on a vertical plane. The Nose can be located near return air vents when used to cover large areas. Avoid outside walls where possible. Avoid areas where epoxy is being used in that the sensors can be irreversibly poisoned and give erroneous readings after contact with epoxies. Avoid placing the sensors to close to heat or contaminant producing equipment.
Q: How often does The Nose need to the calibrated?
The sensors used in the Nose design were chosen in part for their characteristic of maintaining repeatable outputs for years without the requirement of recalibration. The Nose will maintain accuracy under normal operating conditions for a period of about 3 years.
Q: Is the Nose NIST traceable?
PureChoice maintains an audit trail for traceability to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Calibration Program for temperature, relative humidity, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. The PureChoice "Quality Assurance Program" follows applicable internal, national or international standards to ensure an unbroken chain of comparisons to recognized industry references. All equipment used as references for calibration of the PureTrac system is NIST traceable and regularly re-certified.
Q: How is The Nose installed?
The Nose is as simple to install as a programmable thermostat. For the digital versions of The Nose, a base plate is surface mounted and connected with a dual twisted pair of wires. One pair is for power and the other is for LonWorks® communication. For the analog nose, the base plate is surface mounted to a wall and connected with 6 wires. Two terminals supply the 24V AC power. One terminal is a common ground and the remaining 3 connect temperature, humidity and carbon dioxide. Once these prior steps are completed for any version, The Nose circuit board, mounted in a thermoplastic housing, is snapped onto the base plate.
